How often
should I review my Key Areas? Question submitted by
T. Black. We recommend that you conduct a complete review of your Key Areas--once a week. It only takes about ten to fifteen minutes, and it's part of your weekly planning. This way, you keep your eye on the long-term picture and review the results you want to achieve. The downside of not reviewing your Key Areas is that you will quickly fall back into "response mode" time management. A once-a-week review will also prevent any surprises and help you keep a long-term view at your fingertips. This, in turn, will help you make better decisions during the next week. How can I keep my boss from
interrupting me all the time? Question submitted by
J. Baker. There are dozens of techniques that really do work to manage interruptions. Interruptions from a boss, however, present a particular challenge. In part, our boss is one of our most important "customers," and meeting customer demands is normally a high value operational task for most people. If the way your boss interrupts you keeps you from getting other high value work from getting done, you need to have a talk with your boss. Tell your manager you would like to
get more done. The communication pattern the two of you
share, unfortunately, makes it difficult for you to
complete tasks in a timely manner. Ask your boss if you
could both experiment with a different pattern of
communication for a month and see if that helps your
overall productivity. Then suggest a pattern that will
make it possible for your boss to tell you everything
necessary throughout the day and yet reduces the number
of interruptions. Many managers don't always know how
they are negatively impacting their staff. Part of our
responsibility in an office is to let others know the
conditions under which we perform the best.
