Support groups and your health?

Do support groups prevent or cure illnesses, or help in any way at all? The research is spotty at best.

Even if the research finally is able to definitely say that support groups can help us maintain our health or overcoming illnesses, the challenge is with the variation in support groups.

Some groups focus on learning how to cope with disease. Others focus on exploring feelings. The specific people who are in the support group make a difference as well.

Some people actually report feeling worse after joining and participating in some emotionally based support groups. Some feel worse about themselves and blame their families and friends for their health situations.

In short,  there's no guarantee that any specific support group is going to make a difference for you. Yet, most people seem to think that help from others helps us when we are sick, stressed, or coping with a major trauma.

The key is to find a compatible group, and this can take some effort and many tries. Ask yourself what kind of help and support you want. Then visit the group and see if it helps you to feel better.

The web is a great resource for finding self-help groups. Check out www.selfhelpgroups.org.
