OWL BOOK REVIEW
AVIARY
Silberman, Mel with
Freda Hansburg.
People Smart,
Developing Your Interpersonal Intelligence.
San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler
Publishers, Inc., 2000.
ISBN: 1-57675-091-4
Silberman's book is
about emotional intelligence, which he labels PQ (People Smarts). It's
a how-to book, written very simply, and filled with tricks that seminar
leaders have been using for ages. If you have already attended a number
of presentations on communication effectiveness, you will probably find
this book repetitive.
For someone who is
having people problems, however, a book of this type can at a minimum get
someone thinking about what they are doing to contribute to their relationship
difficulties.
Silberman presents
many examples that are intruiging making the book useful for even those
who are skilled in their people dealings and are looking for a refresher.
It's definitely not
an analytical book, but as a "how-to" guide it covers a lot of ground.
Janelle Barlow, Ph.D.
