David Ryback, Putting Emotional Intelligence to Work,
Successful Leadership is More Than IQ.
This book joins a host of new books now available on the subject of emotional intelligence. The first two parts of this book, which will take you up to the half way point in terms of pages, are a summary of much of the literature on emotional intelligence. Part Three is where the author begins to consider the role of emotional intelligence in leadership. One of his strategies in this book is to replicate coaching sessions he has had with leaders. He also briefly outlines approaches that EQ trainers use. The most interesting part of this book is Chapter 10, which lists the ten attributes of executive intelligence. Each one of these attributes could be a complete chapter in a book ala Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. As it is, the way they are explained is to focus on how important it is to have these attributes. Ryback then introduces the classic four quadrant personality types and suggests how to personally enhance the benefits of all four styles within one's self. If you want to read a book that covers a lot of territory, but does not go into much depth, then this is the book for you. As such, it is a good introduction to the field of emotional intelligence. It is hard to imagine that too many people will actually change their behaviors as a result of reading this book, but it might stimulate them to read further in the field. Janelle Barlow, President
